What is Copilot & AI?

Microsoft uses the Copilot name for AI assistants across its products, including Dynamics 365, the Power Platform, Microsoft 365 and GitHub. This section focuses on the business side: assistants that draft text, summarise records and answer questions inside everyday apps, and agents you build yourself. To explore how custom agents work, start with the Copilot Studio overview.

A brief history

Microsoft began adding generative AI to its business applications in 2023, using large language models through Azure OpenAI Service. Copilot features then appeared across Dynamics 365 and the Power Platform. Copilot Studio is the successor to Power Virtual Agents and extends the chatbot tooling into agents that can take actions.

Who uses Copilot & AI?

Sales and service staff use it to summarise customer history and draft replies. Finance and operations users ask questions of their data in plain language. Makers build custom agents with low-code tools, and developers connect those agents to company data and systems. IT and security teams decide where AI features are allowed and how data is handled.

Who should learn Copilot & AI?

Consultants, makers and developers working with Microsoft business apps will increasingly be asked about this. Get comfortable with what the built-in features do first, then learn how to design agents, ground them in your own data, and govern their use.
