What is Business Central?

Dynamics 365 Business Central is Microsoft’s ERP system for small and mid-sized businesses. It puts financials, sales, purchasing, inventory and basic manufacturing in a single application, so a growing company doesn’t need a separate tool for each. It can run in the cloud or on premises. For details on its service architecture and availability, see the Business Central service overview.

A brief history

Business Central grew out of Dynamics NAV, the product that began life as Navision and was later acquired by Microsoft. It was introduced under its current name in 2018, moving the NAV lineage into the Dynamics 365 family and onto a cloud-first footing.

Who uses Business Central?

Finance teams use it for ledgers, payables and receivables, and month-end close. Operations staff handle orders, stock and purchasing. Smaller companies often run it as their main system, and larger groups sometimes deploy it in subsidiaries. Partners and developers extend it with AL, its own programming language, and tailor it for particular industries.

Who should learn Business Central?

It suits functional consultants, accountants moving into ERP work, and developers who want to build extensions. Learn the core finance and inventory flows before anything else, then move into configuration and AL development as your role requires.
