What is Power Platform?
Power Platform is Microsoft’s low-code toolset for building business solutions. Power Apps builds apps, Power Automate handles workflows, Power BI covers reporting, Power Pages builds external websites, and Copilot Studio builds agents. They share Dataverse, a data platform that also underpins Dynamics 365. Developers looking to extend the platform can start with Microsoft’s Power Platform developer guide.
A brief history
The pieces arrived separately: Power BI, then PowerApps and Flow (now Power Apps and Power Automate). Microsoft grouped them as the Power Platform in 2018 and has since added more, including Power Pages and Copilot Studio.
Who uses Power Platform?
Business users and “citizen developers” build simple apps and automations for their own teams. Professional developers extend it with custom code and connectors. Dynamics 365 consultants rely on it to customise and integrate, and administrators set the environments and data policies that keep it governed.
Who should learn Power Platform?
It is useful for analysts, functional consultants and developers who want to solve process problems without building everything from scratch. Begin with Dataverse and one tool, usually Power Apps or Power Automate, and expand from there.
