What is Microsoft Security?

Microsoft’s security and compliance products cover identity, threat protection and data governance across cloud and on-premises systems. Microsoft Entra manages identities and access. Defender detects and responds to threats, Microsoft Sentinel collects security data for monitoring and investigation, and Purview handles data classification and compliance. To learn more about identity and security monitoring, visit the Microsoft Entra overview and the Microsoft Sentinel overview.

A brief history

These products came from several lines of work that Microsoft later grouped under one security banner. Entra is the newer name for what was Azure Active Directory. Defender is a family of protection products, and Sentinel was launched as a cloud-native SIEM.

Who uses Microsoft Security?

Identity administrators manage sign-in, access policies and permissions. Security operations analysts triage alerts and hunt for threats. Compliance and data protection officers apply labels and retention rules. Dynamics 365 and Power Platform deployments depend on all three.

Who should learn Microsoft Security?

It matters to administrators, architects and consultants as much as to dedicated security staff. Start with identity and access, since almost every other control builds on it, and then branch into threat protection or compliance depending on your role.
