What is GitHub?
GitHub is a cloud platform for hosting Git repositories and collaborating on code. Teams plan work with issues, review changes through pull requests, and automate builds, tests and deployments with GitHub Actions. It also includes security tooling such as Dependabot and secret scanning, and GitHub Copilot for AI-assisted coding. If you are new to GitHub, start with this introduction to Git and GitHub.
A brief history
GitHub was founded in 2008 as a place to host Git repositories and became the default home of much open-source software. Microsoft acquired it in 2018. Since then it has added GitHub Actions for CI/CD, Codespaces for cloud development environments and Copilot.
Who uses GitHub?
Developers use it every day to write code and review each other’s work. DevOps and platform engineers build delivery pipelines in Actions. Security teams watch dependency alerts and set branch protection rules. Many Dynamics 365 and Power Platform teams also keep customisations and deployment pipelines there.
Who should learn GitHub?
Anyone who works with code or deployment automation will get value from it, including consultants who maintain solutions in source control. Start with branching and pull requests, then add Actions workflows and repository security.
