Microsoft Certifications for Dynamics Applications in 2025: A Consultant’s Guide

In 2025, Microsoft retired and changed some of the certifications for dynamics applications. In this post, I will guide you to the Microsoft certification landscape for Dynamics applications, share what's changed, and offer my recommendations for your first or next certification.

Microsoft certifications

Understanding the Dynamics Certification Landscape

Microsoft's Dynamics certifications are divided into three categories: Customer Engagement (CRM), Finance and Operations (ERP), and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMB), which covers Dynmics 365 Business Central.

Dynamics 365 Business Central has always been an exception because, even though it's an ERP, its architecture and capabilities differ from the F&O applications; therefore, the certification for this application is not part of the Finance and Operations group.

In addition to the specific certifications for Dynamics apps, Microsoft provides related certifications that aspiring Dynamics Microsoft Certified Professionals must have because they are strictly related to Dynamics. These certifications cover Azure and the Power Platform.

Each application or application family comes with different levels of complexity related to the expertise and the role.

  1. Fundamentals: This is the starting point for beginners. It covers the basics of the Dynamics application and is also perfect for consultants who already specialise in one area and want to learn the others.

  2. Associate: This level is for consultants and users with skills in the specific application they use at work. I recommend getting the associate level after a couple of years of work experience. Associate certifications are not only for Microsoft consultants but also for IT support roles and business analysts; these roles can benefit from obtaining an associate certification because they cover use cases and business scenarios that are common in the workplace.

  3. Expert: Not all dynamics applications include an expert level. However, if your job involves maintaining and extending dynamics applications for your organisation or clients, studying and obtaining an expert certification can transform your career. The roles that should get this type of certification are technical and solution architects working for Microsoft partners, IT managers, and system administrators of enterprises that use Dynamics apps.

I always tell my clients that obtaining a certification does not guarantee a job as a consultant; likewise, not having a certification does not limit your chances of getting a job as a dynamics consultant. Nevertheless, a Microsoft certification showcases your commitment to learning and keeping up-to-date with the latest features and capabilities of the various apps.

The Certifications to Get in 2025

In 2025, Microsoft released new certifications and retired others. Below are the latest certifications arranged by complexity.

Fundamentals Level

  • MB-910: Dynamics 365 Fundamentals (CRM): This is an introduction to CRM apps, also called Customer Engagement applications, for new starters who want to work with customer engagement apps and consultants like me who want to learn the foundations of these apps that can integrate with Business Central or the ERP apps.

  • Azure and Power Platform: These certifications are not part of the Dynamics family but are strongly related to the various applications. Therefore, any Dynamics consultant should have those. As of March 2025, the fundamentals for Azure and the Power Platform are AZ-900 and PL-900.

Associate Level

  • MB-280: Dynamics 365 Customer Experience Analyst: This new certification, released in 2025, replaces the old MB-210 and MB-220 paths. It's the next-level certification for CRM consultants who specialise in D365 Sales and D365 Customer Insights.

  • MB-240: Dynamics 365 Field Service Functional Consultant: Associate certification, also part of the CRM stack, that covers D365 Field Service.

  • MB-310: Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant: Certification of the ERP, also known as F&O, stack for D365 Finance consultants.

  • MB-330: Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant: Also part of the F&O stack, this certification is for consultants who specialise in D365 SCM

  • MB-500: Dynamics 365: Finance and Operations Apps Developer: This certification is one of the few designed for developers, not for functional consultants; it's a nice one to have for F&O solution architects.

  • MB-800: Dynamics 365 Business Central Functional Consultant: This is my first certification that showcases consultant credentials for Business Central. It is also our flagship course, which I have been teaching since I became a Microsoft Certified Trainer.

    • MB-335: Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management Functional Consultant Expert: This certification is for supply chain experts, and it's the advanced step after obtaining the MB-330.

    • MB-700 + MB-701: Dynamics 365: Finance and Operations Apps Solution Architect Expert: A must for F&O solution architects who deliver complex projects.

If you are looking to get certified this year, you must know that Microsoft often updates the curriculum of their certifications.

What's Changed in 2025?

As mentioned before, Microsoft announced a few changes to the Dynamics certifications. Below is a summary of what has changed

  • MB-210, MB-220, MB-260 Retired (Nov 30, 2024): The new MB-280 certification now covers both Sales and Customer Journeys under one credential, making it more comprehensive than the two old combined certifications.

  • MB-300 Retired (Feb 29, 2024): The MB-300 Exam retired on Feb 29, 2024. To obtain the Microsoft Certified: Dynamics 365 Finance Functional Consultant Associate certification, now it is only required to pass the MB-310 Exam.

  • MB-820 Launched (2024): This is the first exam and certification for Business Central developers, a must-have for technical roles working with BC, but also for solution architects.

The new MB-280 and MB-820 certifications emphasise Power Apps and Power Automate, both skills that expert consultants are now expected to have if they want to pass the exam and get certified. I expect that Microsoft will keep embedding power platform skills into dynamics applications.

Areas that Certifications Do Not Cover

A common misconception about passing exams and obtaining a Microsoft certification is that the study material contains all the application features and capabilities; unfortunately, that is not the case.

Associate and expert-level certifications include the must-have skills that Microsoft Certified Professionals are expected to possess. Still, these only cover the pillars of dynamics applications, not all the features. For example, you can obtain the MB-800 certification for Business Central without knowing the advanced modules such as Projects, Warehouse Management, Manufacturing and Service Management. Likewise, country-specific requirements related to other applications, such as VAT or GST, are not covered because the exam is the same in every country.

Final Thoughts

Certifications can help you showcase your competence to your clients or employer. Studying for and obtaining dynamics certifications can help you fast-track your career and keep up-to-date with Microsoft's new releases. However, holding one or more certifications does not guarantee a job placement or a promotion.

As a Microsoft-certified consultant and trainer, I recommend obtaining the CRM and ERP fundamentals by obtaining the MB-910 and MB-920 certifications. Then, spend a couple of years working on projects before getting into the associate levels. Lastly, seek an expert certification if you aim to work as a solution or technical architect.
